Healing and The Chosen--It's Only a Matter of Time

As human beings, it is our responsibility to take care of our bodies the best we can.  Finding the exact definition of what that means differs from person from person, and from season to season within an individual.  What may be reasonable and responsible in one stage of life (say, following a strict AIP diet, getting weekly chiro care, going to the gym every day and/or minimizing all sources of stress) may be a fantastic lifestyle for a certain time, but when life circumstances change, those same things may have to go on the back burner while we tend to more urgent needs.  That is also being reasonable and responsible, and we shouldn't feel guilty when we prioritize other important things (like relationships, time with family members, major life events, etc) over the good things we try to do for our health.  The trick is to do what we reasonably can to understand and care for our bodies in whatever stage of life we are in.

Regardless of what season we are in and how much bandwidth we have to devote toward health and healing, there is one thing that remains constant: we will always be subject to the unknown.  As much as we may work toward a certain outcome, and as likely as it may be to come about, there is always a chance that our best efforts won't produce the results we were hoping for.

Enter God.  For those who believe in a loving, all-knowing and all-powerful Deity, there is a source of healing power greater than anything we could produce or imitate.  He is the one who created our bodies and knows intimately every function, organ system, and cellular interaction.  Whenever we experience healing--whether it corresponds with specific things we are actively doing or not--ultimately, it's all under His care.  My personal feeling is that no doctor or practitioner can claim to heal anything.  One of my pet peeves is when I hear a functional medicine provider talk about how they've healed this or that, and how they can "pretty much heal everything."  Well, there are important tools and education and information out there that we desperately need access to, and these providers often have the skills and understanding to help us apply all of that (and thank heavens for that!), but they are not the ones doing the healing.  They are helping us prime our bodies to do what they are divinely capable of doing. Our bodies are able to heal because they were created by a Master Healer.

But it doesn't always happen.

Are there any fans of The Chosen out there?  The Chosen is a tv series about the ministry of Christ, based in biblical accounts.  But the writers take liberty to come up with backstories and character development that are completely original.  In the end, there's a whole lot of dialogue that isn't from the Bible, but that orchestrates a powerful viewing experience that drives home the compassionate, loving character of Jesus Christ.  As we see Jesus interact with his followers in the context of specific, relatable difficulties and plot developments (that may or may not have actually happened), things become more real and the message penetrates a little deeper.

In one scene, Jesus is approached by one of his disciples, known as 'Little James."  Little James is depicted as having a limp that makes it harder for him to move around.  Jesus seems to be healing physical maladies left and right, but He hasn't healed Little James yet.  And Little James hasn't requested it since there seem to be so many more pressing needs.  When Jesus sends His 12 Apostles out to minister to others, He gives them power to do the things they have seen Him do.  Humble Little James approaches Jesus with some concern that, in his limited state, he would be able to exercise such power.  The conversation that ensues made a big difference for me, particularly in regards to our infertility struggle and watching so many people around us find eventual success--but not us.

I considered directly quoting the conversation here, but the scene is so much more impactful.  And no further commentary is needed.  Do yourself a favor and watch this 6 and a half minute clip from The Chosen that depicts this conversation.  If you're in any need of healing, it will feed your soul.

And remember, you will be healed.   It's only a matter of time.
